IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Takashi "Shiro" Shirogane
Character journal:
lionunchained
Series name: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon notes: After removing his soul from the Black Lion and putting it in the body of one of the clones and they have returned to Earth.
Species: Human
Age: 26
Arrival Condition: Physically okay. Emotionally, maybe not so much.
History: wiki
Personality:
- Leadership: Shiro was selected as the leader of Kerberos mission, being trusted with that responsibility. He also naturally takes on the role of overseeing the four younger paladins, giving them advice, support, or correction as the situation calls for – some examples including offering Keith advice on how to find the red lion, offering Pidge support when she was freaking out about “what ifs” involved with piloting the green lion, and stopping Lance from hitting on Allura. The four younger paladins also turn to him for advice and even someone to hide behind, which Hunk did in one episode.
- Protective: Shiro looks after the other members of the Voltron team almost like they were his family. One several occasions, he has teamed up with Pidge on missions or went with her, likely because she is the youngest. Despite being injured himself, Shiro piloting the black lion went out of his way to pull Keith and the red lion to safety after they attempted to fight Zarkon. I also feel that more than half the issues he had with Slav (see below) were because he had Lance and Pidge with him and he was worried for them.
- Laid back: All work and no play is not an adage that Shiro lives by and when he wants to, he can be just as silly as the teenaged paladins. When the three paladins are giving their version of laser sounds, he initially takes the “adult” road saying “okay, enough with the bad sound effects” only to add “besides its more like…” and giving his own imitation. He also participated in the food goo fight when the younger paladins started, grinning like a loon when the fight was over.
- PTSD: Shiro has some obvious issues from his time as a prisoner of the Galra, exhibiting textbook symptoms. Initially he remembered nothing about his captivity with the Galra. Memories though do come back, sometimes not always in the best way. For example, he froze and became unresponsive seeing the Altean training robot for the first time because it resembled a Galra drone. The battle with first robeast not only brought his memory of the battle arena but also what happened to Pidge's family. He also randomly remembers information especially when on Galra ships, such as remembering the patterns the Galra drones follow when on patrol. In a particularly erratic moment, he panicked and ejected their prisoner Sendak in to space because he thought Sendak was taunting him though he was in an unresponsive state.
- Lack of patience (with circumstances): For the most part, Shiro is very patient with others. However, when his concern for his safety and the safety of teammates was called into question by Slav – a prisoner of the Galra – saying “In 98 and 3/100th of a percent of realities with a prison break, I DIE! And your chances are even worse!” he becomes extremely impatient with Slav and his eccentricities, culminating in yelling at him on board the blue lion for commenting on traveling by teladuv, an action so out of place it scares Lance and Pidge.
- Low self-image: While not outright saying it, Shiro’s low self-image comes out. His Galra hand caused issues when “Sendak” claimed it was the best part of him, causing Shiro to eject Sendak into space. After being attacked and badly injured by Hagger, he tells Keith that if he’s not around, he should be the one to lead Voltron. It also prompted a rather morbid death joke as well so the value of his own life seems to drop at least temporarily.
- Stubborn: Shiro has always wanted to protect those he's taken under his wing and when things aren't going well, he'll refuse to leave them even at insistence. Allura had to literally throw into a shuttle because he was trying to save both of them and he was needed in order for the team to save Voltron at the time. A new level of stubbornness is shown when Shiro's long term boyfriend is introduced at the beginning of season 7. So determined is Shiro to not let a disease he has beat him and keep him from living his life, he is partially at fault for imploding his relationship to keep Adam from worrying about him / have that attachment. All because he wanted to go on the Kerberos Mission.
Abilities:
- Piloting: Prior to becoming the pilot for Black Lion, Shiro was an expedition pilot for the Garrison (an organization that seems to be a combination of the army and NASA) being selected for a research mission to the moon Kerberos. While not stated as to yet, it is safe to assume that Shiro went through the same training shown in the first episode with teenagers Lance, Hunk, and Pidge which did focus heavily on piloting.
- Combat: Shiro is shown to be comfortable with hand-to-hand combat, using it as his preferred method of combat before he knew about his Galra arm - which is no longer applicable. It is also implied that he able to use a hand gun from a scene where three of the younger paladins are trying to figure out laser sounds and Shiro puts in his two cents with what is clearly imitating a hand gun.
- Robotic hand: Formerly a Galra arm. This arm is far less powerful in combat, but it consists only of a hand and forearm which float in the proper location for where it should be if he had an arm from the shoulder down.
Personal Item: Does his floating robotic arm count as a personal item? If so, definitely yes.
